Toyota Motors is to build the world’s first megawatt-scale carbonate fuel cell power generation plant, including a hydrogen fuelling station to support its operations in Long Beach, California.
The facility will use agricultural wastes, including dairy manure, to generate water, electricity and hydrogen. The system so-produces hydrogen and green energy from methane-based fuels such as biogas from Anaerobic Digestion.
When it comes on line in 2020, Tri-Gen will generate about 2.35 megawatts of electricity and 1.2 tonnes of hydrogen a day, enough to power about 2,350 (Californian) homes and meet the daily driving needs of nearly 1,500 (Californian) vehicles, including the company’s experimental hydrogen-fuelled truck.
